Key Takeaways
- 1Use the Swiss route in the UAE only when Switzerland or Liechtenstein is the sole or main Schengen destination.
- 2For multi-country trips, apply where you spend the longest time; use first Schengen entry only when stays are equal and no main destination can be identified.
- 3Swiss-route short-stay applications in the UAE are submitted through VFS Global and forwarded to the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi, with FDFA listing Abu Dhabi and Dubai VAC options.
- 4A UAE residence visa does not by itself make a traveller visa-exempt; visa need depends on passport nationality and document type.
- 5Applications showing another Schengen country as the main destination should not be filed through the Swiss/Liechtenstein route.
Start with the country responsible for the trip
The useful distinction is this: a Liechtenstein visa from the UAE is not a separate national short-stay route. For visa-required UAE residents, Liechtenstein travel is handled inside the Schengen Visa system. The Swiss FDFA page for the UAE states that the visa section of the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi processes applications from permanent residents of the UAE or Bahrain who intend to travel to Switzerland or Liechtenstein, provided one of those countries is the main travel destination; applications listing another Schengen country as the main destination will not be accepted (Swiss FDFA, UAE Schengen documents page).
So the practical answer is: use the Swiss route in the UAE only when Liechtenstein or Switzerland is your sole or main destination. If Liechtenstein is a one-day side trip during a longer stay in Austria, Germany, France or another Schengen country, that other country’s route is usually the correct one. For case preparation support, Oki-Doki’s Liechtenstein Schengen Visa service can help check the routing before documents are built around the wrong consulate.
If you are comparing this with other route-selection problems, the same main-destination logic is explained in our guides to a Slovakia visa in Dubai and a Luxembourg visa from the UAE.
The rule that decides the route
The European Commission explains that a Schengen application is lodged at the consulate of the country the traveller intends to visit. For trips covering more than one Schengen country, the application is made to the country where the traveller will spend the longest time. If the stays are of equal length, the application is made to the consulate of the first Schengen country visited (European Commission, Applying for a Schengen visa).
The EUR-Lex summary of the Visa Code frames the same hierarchy as sole destination, main destination, and then first entry if the main destination cannot be determined (EUR-Lex Visa Code summary). For UAE-based applicants, the territorial starting point also matters: the European Commission says applicants should generally apply at the consulate with responsibility for the country where they are legally resident.
This means first entry is not a shortcut. It matters only when the itinerary has equal stays and no main destination can otherwise be identified. A Dubai-to-Zurich flight does not make Switzerland responsible if the real trip is a week in France with a brief connection or side visit.
Three common Liechtenstein trip patterns
Liechtenstein-only or Liechtenstein as the main stay
If your planned short stay is only in Liechtenstein, or Liechtenstein clearly carries the main purpose and stay, the Swiss route in the UAE is the relevant route for visa-required residents. The Swiss FDFA page specifically covers travel to Switzerland or Liechtenstein where one of those countries is the main travel destination (Swiss FDFA).
Switzerland plus Liechtenstein
If the trip is Switzerland and Liechtenstein, use the Swiss route when Switzerland or Liechtenstein is the longest or main part of the trip. For example, three nights in Switzerland and two nights in Liechtenstein points to the Swiss channel because Switzerland is the longest stay and the UAE Swiss page covers Switzerland and Liechtenstein main-destination files.
Liechtenstein as a side trip from another country
If you spend most of the trip in another Schengen country, the presence of Liechtenstein in the itinerary does not automatically make the Swiss route correct. A five-night Austria stay with a one-day Vaduz visit should not be filed as a Swiss/Liechtenstein case if Austria is the real main destination. The Swiss FDFA UAE page is explicit that applications listing a different Schengen country as main destination will not be accepted.
Decision table for UAE itineraries involving Liechtenstein
| Itinerary from the UAE | Correct application route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai resident, 5 days only in Liechtenstein | Swiss route in the UAE, if the passport requires a short-stay Schengen visa | Liechtenstein is the sole destination; the Swiss Embassy in Abu Dhabi processes UAE/Bahrain resident applications for Switzerland or Liechtenstein main-destination travel. |
| Dubai resident, Switzerland 3 days + Liechtenstein 2 days | Swiss route in the UAE | Switzerland is the longest stay, and Switzerland/Liechtenstein is within the Swiss UAE channel. |
| UAE resident, Liechtenstein 4 days + Switzerland 1 day | Swiss route in the UAE | Liechtenstein is the main stay; the Swiss UAE page covers Liechtenstein main-destination applications. |
| UAE resident, Austria 5 days + Liechtenstein day trip | Austrian route, not the Swiss/Liechtenstein route | The longest stay is Austria. Liechtenstein is only a side trip. |
| UAE resident, France 6 days + Switzerland 1 day + Liechtenstein 1 day | French route | France is the longest Schengen stay. A brief visit to Liechtenstein does not move the file to Switzerland. |
| UAE resident, Germany 3 days + Liechtenstein 3 days, first Schengen entry Germany, no other main purpose | German route | Where stays are equal and no main destination can be determined, the European Commission points to the first Schengen country visited. |
| UAE resident, Germany 2 days + France 2 days + Liechtenstein 2 days, first Schengen entry France, no main destination | French route | Equal stays with no identifiable main destination make first Schengen entry decisive. |
How the Swiss route works in the UAE
For ordinary short-stay category A and C applications under the Swiss route, the Swiss FDFA UAE page says applications must be submitted through VFS Global and are then forwarded to the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi. The same official page lists Switzerland visa application centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the UAE (Swiss FDFA, application and procedure).
The FDFA “where to apply” page, published on 28 May 2026, also says that after the new VFS contract effective 1 July 2025, applicants are required to complete the visa application form online before scheduling an appointment, and that acceptance through VFS Global continues without interruption (Swiss FDFA, where to apply). Treat VFS as the Visa Application Center and collection-service channel, not as the source that changes the legal route-selection rule.
There are limited situations where VFS may not be the ordinary submission path. The Swiss FDFA where-to-apply page says family members of a Swiss, EU or EEA citizen are entitled to submit directly at the Embassy visa section with an appointment, and that cabin crew or airline crew who need their passport back during processing should contact the visa section before booking through VFS.
Check whether you need a visa before choosing the centre
“UAE resident” and “UAE national” are different. A UAE national means the passport nationality is the United Arab Emirates. A UAE resident may hold any passport while living legally in the UAE. The Swiss UAE visa-check page lists United Arab Emirates nationality as not having a short-stay visa obligation, with annotations, and says travellers who are not visa-obliged may enter Switzerland or the Schengen territory and stay up to 90 days within a 180-day period (Swiss FDFA, Do I need a Schengen visa?).
For expatriate residents, the need for a visa depends on passport nationality and document type, not on the UAE residence card alone. A UAE residence visa or Emirates ID helps show UAE jurisdiction, but it does not by itself create Schengen visa-free status. If the passport requires a visa and the itinerary points to Switzerland or Liechtenstein as the responsible destination, the Swiss route in the UAE is the practical path.
Source hierarchy to avoid wrong filing
Use official sources in this order. First, the Swiss Embassy/FDFA UAE pages are the operative UAE-specific source for Switzerland and Liechtenstein submissions, including the Abu Dhabi Embassy role, VFS submission channel, and Dubai/Abu Dhabi VAC options. Second, the European Commission and Visa Code sources define the Schengen main-destination hierarchy across the Schengen Area. Third, the VFS portal is useful for form, appointment and centre functions, but it should not be your only authority for deciding which country is legally responsible for the application.
Before booking, write down the country-by-country nights, the main purpose, the first external Schengen entry, and the passport nationality. If the answer points to Switzerland or Liechtenstein, the Swiss route in the UAE is coherent. If the answer points to Austria, Germany, France or another Schengen country, do not submit the file as a Swiss/Liechtenstein case merely because Liechtenstein appears in the travel plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
UAE residence alone does not create visa-on-arrival access for Liechtenstein or the Schengen area. UAE nationals may be visa-exempt for short stays according to the Swiss FDFA visa-check page, but expatriate UAE residents must check the requirement for their passport nationality before travel.
The requirement is based on Indian passport status and document type, not on UAE residence alone. Indian citizens living in the UAE should check the current official Swiss or EU visa-obligation list and, if a Schengen visa is required, choose the route by the main-destination rule.
A Pakistani citizen legally resident in Dubai should first confirm the visa requirement for the Pakistani passport, then apply through the UAE channel of the Schengen country responsible for the itinerary. If Liechtenstein or Switzerland is the sole or main destination, the Swiss route in the UAE is the relevant channel.
No. Appointment availability does not change the Schengen main-destination rule. If Austria, Germany, France or another Schengen country is the main destination, the file should not be submitted through the Swiss/Liechtenstein route.
A short-stay Schengen visa is for temporary visits, not immigration or long-term residence. If the purpose is work, residence, study or family relocation, the traveller must check the separate long-stay or residence rules rather than using a tourist itinerary.
