Liechtenstein Visa for a Baby from the UAE: Newborn Documents

A Liechtenstein visa for a baby from the UAE is not a special newborn visa. If the baby’s passport nationality requires a short-stay Schengen Visa, the infant is a separate applicant: own passport first, then own visa form, photo, insurance and supporting evidence. For UAE-based families, Liechtenstein short-stay applications are handled through the Switzerland/Liechtenstein route when Switzerland or Liechtenstein is the sole or main destination; the Embassy of Switzerland in Abu Dhabi states that it processes applications for permanent residents of the UAE or Bahrain travelling to Switzerland or Liechtenstein, and Schengen A/C applications are submitted through VFS Global in Abu Dhabi or Dubai (Swiss Embassy UAE).

Liechtenstein visa for a baby from the UAE: the evidence problem parents must solve

The file must make one simple story easy to verify: a newborn baby, recently issued a first passport in the UAE, is joining the parents’ genuine short family trip to Liechtenstein or Switzerland and will travel on the same itinerary. The infant’s lack of travel history is not something to hide or replace with irrelevant papers. The stronger task is to connect the baby to the parents, the trip, the accommodation, the funding and the return plan without contradictions.

Evidence problem 1: the baby cannot apply before the first passport exists

The newborn needs their own travel document before the Schengen application can be completed. The UAE Swiss/VFS checklist requires the original passport to have at least two empty pages, to have been issued within the last 10 years and to be valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen States (VFS Switzerland UAE checklist). A first passport will normally be newly issued, but parents should still check the expiry date against the planned return from Schengen.

Do not try to treat the baby as an attachment to a parent’s passport or a note in a family booking. For the visa file, the infant is the applicant. The passport number, name order, date of birth and nationality on the application form must match the baby’s passport exactly.

First-passport checks before filling the form

• Baby’s surname, given names and nationality match the passport data page.
• Date of birth matches the UAE birth certificate or other parenthood evidence.
• Passport has at least two blank pages and covers the Schengen return date plus at least three months.
• Parents’ names on the birth certificate are consistent with parent passport names, allowing for transliteration differences.

Evidence problem 2: the route is Swiss/Liechtenstein, but the baby is still a separate applicant

Where Liechtenstein or Switzerland is the main destination, the UAE route goes through the Swiss system and the Visa Application Center (VFS). That does not merge the newborn into the mother’s or father’s application. The SEM short-stay Schengen form is used for stays up to three months and includes a field for parental authority or legal guardian; the harmonised form text says a minor’s form is signed by parental authority or legal guardian (SEM Schengen visa form page).

For UAE Swiss/VFS processing, the operational checklist is stricter for minors: for applicants under 18, both parents must sign the application form and add copies of their passports; if one parent cannot sign, that parent must provide a letter of agreement with a passport copy (VFS checklist). Follow the UAE VFS checklist unless the Embassy or VFS gives written case-specific instructions.

Baby-specific core checklist

• Baby’s own passport meeting the validity and blank-page rules.
• Completed short-stay Schengen application form for the baby, signed as required for a minor.
• One recent visa photo for the baby.
• Travel medical insurance identifying the baby as the applicant or clearly listing the baby in the insured persons schedule.
• Birth certificate or other legal parenthood evidence to connect the infant to the parents.
• Copies of parents’ passports and, where relevant for consent, signature pages and UAE residence visa copies.
• Family itinerary evidence: flights or reservations, accommodation or invitation evidence, and funding or sponsorship evidence aligned with the parents’ file.

Evidence problem 3: the birth certificate proves the relationship, but it must not create name conflicts

The reviewed UAE Swiss/VFS visitor checklist does not state that every ordinary tourist minor must submit a UAE birth certificate in every case. However, for a newborn, parenthood proof is a practical supporting document because it explains why the parents sign, sponsor and travel with the baby. The checklist separately refers to proof of family relation, such as a birth certificate legalised by UAE/Bahrain authorities, in the family-member context (VFS checklist). Parents should therefore treat the birth certificate as important relationship evidence and confirm whether legalisation or translation is needed for their specific file.

Consistency is the main risk. UAE birth certificates, passports and residence records may show names in different orders or transliterations. If the baby’s passport uses one spelling and the birth certificate uses another, add a short cover note explaining that the documents refer to the same child and parents, and support it with matching dates, passport copies and official records. Do not alter official documents to make them look identical.

Evidence problem 4: consent must match who applies and who travels

Minor consent rules are especially important when a newborn is added to a family trip after the parents have already planned or filed their own travel. The current VFS Switzerland UAE visa information page says that if a minor applies with only one parent, written consent of the other parent is required, together with that parent’s passport copy, signature page and residence visa copy. If neither parent is applying, written consent from both parents is required, together with passport copies, signature pages and residence visa copies (VFS Switzerland UAE visa information).

The VFS checklist also states that minors travelling without their parents or legal guardian must provide an original authorisation signed by the parents or legal guardian in front of a visa officer or duly legalised, plus copies of the parents’ or legal guardian’s passports (VFS checklist). Where custody, guardianship or parental authority is affected by a court order or legal arrangement, do not rely on a generic consent letter alone; prepare the legal evidence and confirm the format expected by VFS or the Embassy.

No UAE-specific source reviewed for this article confirms a blanket rule that a newborn is exempt from attending VFS or that one or both parents must physically attend. Parents should not assume either point. Check the current appointment instructions shown by VFS for the selected centre.

Evidence problem 5: the infant photo and biometrics are not the same issue

The baby still needs a compliant visa photo. The VFS checklist requires one recent photograph, not older than six months, size 3.5 x 4.5 cm, with a light background, glued on the application form; the face must be fully visible and head coverings are not permitted except for religious reasons (VFS checklist). The VFS information page also warns that a non-compliant photo can make the application incomplete (VFS Switzerland UAE).

Do not invent newborn-photo relaxations. The official UAE sources reviewed did not provide special baby rules such as allowed support hands, sleeping eyes or lying-down setup. Use a photo provider familiar with Schengen/ICAO infant photos, and check the print before submission.

Biometrics are separate from the printed photo. The European Commission states that Schengen applications require a photo meeting ICAO standards and fingerprints, with children under 12 exempt from fingerprinting (European Commission). Fingerprint exemption does not remove the need for a photo or a properly submitted baby application.

Evidence problem 6: insurance and money evidence must identify the baby, not only the parents

The UAE Swiss/VFS checklist requires travel medical insurance covering emergency medical care, hospitalisation and repatriation, including in case of death, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000, valid for the entire Schengen area and for the duration of the stay (VFS checklist). The VFS information page adds that the insurance must clearly mention applicant details, coverage validity, geographical scope and amount covered; insurance cards without those details are not accepted (VFS Switzerland UAE).

Because the newborn is the visa applicant, the safest evidence pack shows the baby’s name or identifiable applicant details on the certificate or insured-person schedule. If the policy is a family policy, attach the page that lists each insured person and the Schengen coverage.

For finances, the baby does not have personal income. The file should connect the infant to the parent or sponsor paying for the trip: parent bank statements or sponsorship evidence, parent employment or residence evidence where used, and a short explanation that the baby is fully dependent and travelling with the family. Evidence problem 7: adding a newborn to an existing family trip can create contradictions

If the parents already planned the trip before the baby’s passport arrived, update the file instead of simply inserting the baby’s form. Common contradictions include a hotel booking for two adults only, a flight reservation missing the infant, insurance bought before the baby was added, or a cover letter that says the parents are travelling without children.

Where the family also plans to visit another Schengen country, confirm that Switzerland or Liechtenstein remains the main destination before using the Swiss route. Use this as a checkable artifact before booking or attending the appointment. It is not an official form; it is a practical consistency map for the baby’s evidence pack.

• Applicant identity: baby’s passport name, date of birth, nationality and passport number match the Schengen form and insurance certificate.
• Parent relationship: birth certificate or parenthood evidence links the baby to the signing parents; any spelling variation is explained.
• Consent position: both parents sign the form, or the non-signing parent’s agreement and passport copy are included; if one or neither parent applies, the VFS consent documents are added.
• Residence status: parents’ UAE residence copies are included where VFS asks for them in the minor consent context; if the baby has UAE residence or Emirates ID evidence, include it only if applicable and consistent.
• Trip link: baby appears on the flight or infant booking, hotel or accommodation evidence, travel insurance and family cover letter.
• Destination logic: Liechtenstein or Switzerland is the sole or main destination; another Schengen country has not become the real main stay.
• First-passport explanation: the cover note states that the baby is a newborn with a first passport and no previous travel history, without making unsupported claims about approval.

Fees: under-six treatment and what parents still need to confirm

At EU level, the European Commission lists the Schengen visa fee as waived for children under six (European Commission). For a newborn, this refers to the Schengen visa fee category, not every possible amount payable at the appointment. VFS service charges, optional services, courier, SMS or other local charges may still apply if shown by the current VFS fee page or booking/payment screen.
