Kenya Visa for UAE Residents: eTA Decision Guide

A passport-first Kenya eTA decision guide for UAE residents planning tourism, short visits or airport transit, with checks to complete before paying.

Key Takeaways

  • 1UAE residence alone is not an official Kenya eTA exemption; start with passport nationality and any Kenya-specific status.
  • 2Ordinary UAE-based tourists and short visitors usually need a Kenya eTA unless an official exemption category applies.
  • 3Before applying, check passport validity of at least six months after planned arrival, one blank page, photo, itinerary, accommodation and payment method.
  • 4Transit without entering Kenya may be exempt, but leaving the airport precincts or passing immigration can change the decision.
  • 5Carry the approved eTA if required, passport, onward or return ticket, accommodation or host details, itinerary, funds evidence if asked, and current health documents.

Kenya visa for UAE residents: the quick decision before you pay

Before starting any form, make one decision: which passport and Kenya status are you travelling on? For a Kenya visa for UAE residents, a UAE residence visa alone is not the deciding factor. As of 15 September 2026, Kenya’s official eTA guidance says visitors, including infants and children, need an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before travel unless they fall within listed exemptions; the exemption rules are based on passport nationality, Kenya immigration status and specific transit or official categories, not UAE residence by itself (Kenya eTA How to Apply).

Quick answer: if you are a UAE-based expatriate travelling on an ordinary passport and you are going to Kenya for tourism or a short private visit, you should expect to apply for a Kenya eTA unless your passport nationality or Kenya-specific status appears in an official exemption category. If you are an Emirati citizen, do not assume visa-free entry: UAE MoFA’s Kenya page lists Electronic Visa eTA for UAE diplomatic, special, official and normal passports and directs travellers to Kenya’s eTA website (UAE MoFA Kenya travel information).

This is a decision guide, not a full application walkthrough. If you want support after the checks below, Oki-Doki can help with the Kenya Tourist Visa (eTA) route for UAE-based applicants. The passport-first logic is similar to other e-visa and visitor routes from the UAE; for example, our Canada visitor visa decision guide for UAE residents explains why residence in the Emirates and passport nationality must be separated.

The passport-first decision tree for UAE-based travellers

Use this sequence before you pay. If one branch clearly applies, follow that branch instead of treating every UAE resident the same.

If you are a Kenyan citizen or hold a Kenya-issued return document

If you hold a valid Kenya passport or a one-way emergency certificate issued by a Kenya mission abroad, the official eTA exemption list treats you as exempt from eTA (Kenya eTA How to Apply). Carry the relevant Kenya document and check airline requirements before departure.

If you already hold Kenya immigration status

If you hold Kenya permanent residence, a valid Kenya work permit or pass, a valid Kenya re-entry pass, or written authority in lieu of a re-entry pass, check the official exemption wording before applying. Kenya also lists certain holders of valid Kenya eVISAs, valid UN Conventional Travel Documents issued by the Government of Kenya, and accredited diplomatic or international-organisation members as exempt in the tourist eTA materials (Kenya tourist eTA requirements).

If your passport is from an East African Partner State

If you are a citizen of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania or Uganda, Kenya’s eTA guidance lists an exemption for East African Partner State citizens. One official page states the exemption for a period not exceeding 180 days, while the tourist page describes it as six months; treat the official wording on the live portal as controlling when you travel (Kenya eTA How to Apply).

If your nationality is on Kenya’s exemption lists

Some nationalities are exempt for a limited short-stay period. Kenya’s official How to Apply page lists a 90-day exemption category including, among others, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Cyprus, Dominica, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Fiji, The Gambia, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malaysia, Maldives, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Union of Comoros, Samoa, San Marino, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, South Africa, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, The Bahamas, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, the Republic of Congo, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It also lists a 60-day exemption category for several African nationalities, including Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sudan, Togo and Tunisia (Kenya eTA How to Apply). If your passport is not listed, do not use UAE residence as a substitute exemption.

If you are only transiting through Kenya

If you arrive and leave by the same aircraft, transfer to another aircraft without leaving the airport precincts, arrive and leave by the same ship without leaving the ship, or fall within the listed crew/private-aircraft refuelling categories, Kenya’s eTA page lists transit-style exemptions (Kenya eTA How to Apply). The practical test is whether you will enter Kenya. If you plan to pass immigration, collect baggage landside, change airports, stay overnight outside the airport or meet someone in Nairobi before continuing, do not assume the transit exemption applies.

If none of the exemption branches applies

If you are taking an ordinary tourist trip, family visit, safari, beach holiday, short meeting with friends, or similar private visit, and no official exemption fits your passport or status, apply for the eTA before travel. Kenya’s FAQ says an approved eTA should be printed, downloaded to a mobile device or saved in the official app and shown at departure and arrival points; it also states that the traveller is allowed to travel only after approval by the Government of Kenya (Kenya eTA FAQ).

Tourism, visiting and transit are not the same decision

For a holiday, safari or short private visit, the tourist eTA route is usually the relevant starting point if you are not exempt. But a short flight from Dubai or Abu Dhabi does not automatically make every trip a tourist trip. If the real purpose is employment, study, residence, long-term assignment, paid activity, relocation or another non-tourist purpose, you may need a different Kenya permit or authorisation, or additional documents beyond a simple visitor file.

The official eTA materials show that case-by-case documents may include financial assets or bank letters, vaccination or test certificates, medical letters, conference letters, employment contracts, business invitation and company registration, or family and host documents (Kenya eTA privacy policy and data categories). For a genuine conference, business, medical or family-hosted trip, choose the purpose honestly and prepare documents that match the purpose rather than forcing the file into a generic tourist label.

Pre-application checklist for a short Kenya trip

Before you start the Kenya eTA application, prepare the items the official tourist page and FAQ identify for travellers. This avoids paying under the wrong assumption and reduces avoidable data errors.

  • Passport: valid for at least six months after the planned date of arrival in Kenya, with at least one blank page (Kenya tourist eTA requirements).
  • Photo: a selfie or passport-type photo.
  • Contact details: email address and phone number you can access while travelling.
  • Travel itinerary: arrival and departure details, including flight and date information where available.
  • Accommodation: hotel booking confirmations or address and contact details for the host in Kenya.
  • Payment method: credit card, debit card or another accepted means of payment shown by the portal.
  • Purpose-specific evidence: if the portal requests it, be ready for host invitations, business documents, health certificates, financial evidence or other supporting papers.

If you also handle other online visas from the UAE, the same final-review discipline helps. Our India e-Visa document checks from the UAE article explains common online-form mistakes such as mismatched passport data and inconsistent travel details.

Checks for Emirati citizens and expatriate UAE residents

For UAE citizens: verify both sides before travel. Kenya’s official exemption lists reviewed do not include the United Arab Emirates in the ordinary 90-day or 60-day nationality exemptions, and UAE MoFA’s Kenya page, last modified 09-07-2026, lists Electronic Visa eTA for UAE diplomatic, special, official and normal passport types (UAE MoFA Kenya travel information). Kenya’s portal is the entry-authorisation source; MoFA is the UAE-facing travel advisory source.

For expatriate residents in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or another Emirate: your Emirates ID and UAE residence status may support your identity and residence history, but they do not replace the passport-nationality check. An Indian, Filipino, Pakistani, South African, Egyptian, Nigerian, Russian or European resident of the UAE must check Kenya’s rule for that passport and any Kenya status held.

What to carry before you fly and on arrival

Approval is not the only checkpoint. Kenya’s immigration guidance says foreign nationals may be required to produce an eTA, return or onward tickets or other evidence of onward travel, evidence of enough funds for the stay, hotel booking or the host’s physical address and telephone contacts, and the travel itinerary in Kenya (Kenya arrival procedures). Carriers must also verify valid travel documents before boarding, including an eTA and other applicable immigration requirements such as a return or onward ticket where applicable (Kenya carrier obligations).

  • Approved eTA, if required, saved offline and printed if practical.
  • Passport with at least six months’ validity and one blank page.
  • Return or onward ticket.
  • Hotel booking, host address and host contact number.
  • Safari, domestic flight or activity itinerary, if relevant.
  • Proof of funds or accessible bank evidence if an officer asks.
  • Current health or vaccination evidence where required by your origin, transit history or Kenya’s rules at the time of travel; Kenya’s traveller-obligations page says travellers must comply with health and vaccination requirements before entering Kenya (Kenya traveller obligations).

Your next action

If you have a simple tourism or short-visit itinerary and no exemption applies, gather the passport, photo, contact, itinerary, accommodation and payment details before starting the eTA. If the trip involves work, study, relocation, a conference, medical treatment, a host invitation or uncertainty about transit, check the route first rather than correcting the purpose after submission. Oki-Doki can review the decision and support the Kenya Tourist Visa (eTA) preparation for applicants based in the UAE.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do not plan on visa on arrival as a UAE resident. Kenya’s official eTA guidance requires visitors to obtain approval before travel unless an exemption applies, and the FAQ says the approved eTA must be shown at departure and arrival points.

For short visits, use the official Kenya eTA route before travel unless you are exempt. Older visa-on-arrival assumptions can create boarding problems because carriers check travel documents and applicable eTA requirements before boarding.

Check the live official Kenya eTA portal before paying. The supplied official evidence confirms that a payment method is required, but it does not provide a fee amount that should be quoted here.

Use the current official portal for timing. The evidence reviewed does not establish a reliable processing range, and Kenya’s FAQ states that travel is allowed only after approval by the Government of Kenya.
