How the Score is Calculated

UK Visa Approval Assessment Methodology

Our calculator analyzes 8 key factors that directly influence UK embassy decisions. The database covers 82+ nationalities, each with an individual approval coefficient based on published visa statistics. UK difficulty rating: Easy (2/5). Each factor carries an individual weight that reflects real-world consulate decision-making patterns.

How the Weighted Scoring System Works

Each factor is scored from 0 to 100 points based on your answer. That score is then multiplied by the factor's weight (importance percentage). Your final score is the sum of all weighted scores, adjusted for the country's difficulty level.

Final Score = Σ (Factor Score × Factor Weight) − Country Difficulty Adjustment

The 8 Factors Explained

1.
NationalityBaseline approval coefficient for your passport. Based on published visa issuance statistics. Nationals from high-trust countries (UAE, EU, Japan) receive the highest score; countries with historically high refusal rates receive the lowest.
2.
UAE Residency DurationHow long you have lived in the UAE. 5+ years is the strongest stability signal. Under 1 year significantly increases refusal risk, as the embassy questions your intent to return.
3.
UAE Visa ValidityRemaining validity on your UAE residence visa. Schengen and UK require at least 6 months beyond your return date. Under 3 months is a critical risk factor.
4.
Travel HistoryThe most influential factor after nationality. Multiple used visas to the same country earn the top score. Visas to other developed countries (US, UK, Australia) earn a moderate score. First-time international travel is a significant negative signal.
5.
Visa RejectionsA clean record with no rejections earns the maximum score. One old rejection (2+ years ago) is a moderate negative. A recent rejection is a serious negative. Multiple rejections result in a critically low score. For USA and UK, rejections are tracked in global systems.
6.
Employment StatusStable employment at the same company for 2+ years earns the top score. Business ownership for 3+ years scores nearly as high. Freelancing and recent job changes (under 6 months) lower the score. Unemployment is a critical risk factor.
7.
Monthly SalarySalary of AED 15,000+ earns the top score. AED 5,000–7,000 is borderline. Below AED 3,000 is critically low. The embassy assesses whether you can fund the trip without breaching financial obligations.
8.
Bank Statement HealthA stable balance with gradual growth is the ideal scenario. A large recent deposit ("funds parking") is a serious red flag. A low or fluctuating balance reduces your chances.

Country Difficulty Adjustment

The final score is adjusted by UK's strictness level (2/5). Countries with high strictness (4–5) apply an additional deduction to the final score, as their consulates impose stricter documentation and evidence requirements. Countries with low strictness (1–2) apply no additional deduction.

Important: The calculator is based on published visa statistics and expert experience from processing thousands of applications from the UAE. It does not guarantee an outcome — the final decision always rests with the consular officer. Use the result as a guide for preparing your documentation.

Complete Guide to UK Transit Visa from UAE — 2026

UK Transit Visa for UAE Residents — Overview

The UK Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) is required by nationals of certain countries to transit through a UK airport — even if they never leave the international transit area and never pass through UK immigration control. Many UAE residents are surprised to discover they need a UK transit visa simply to change planes at London Heathrow or Gatwick. The DATV costs GBP 35 (approximately AED 167) and is applied for online at gov.uk/transit-visa. A second category — the Visitor in Transit Visa (GBP 115) — is required for travellers who must pass through UK immigration control during their connection. Oki Doki confirms the correct transit visa category for every nationality before any application is prepared.

Two Types of UK Transit Visa

(1) Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) — for passengers transiting through a UK airport without passing through UK immigration control. The traveller stays within the international transit zone at all times and connects between two international flights airside. Cost: GBP 35 (approximately AED 167). (2) Visitor in Transit Visa — for passengers who must pass through UK immigration control during transit — for example, travellers connecting via terminals that require exiting airside, or travellers who need to collect checked baggage and re-check it for their onward flight. Cost: GBP 115 (approximately AED 550). Both categories are applied for online at gov.uk/transit-visa with biometrics at VFS Global UAE.

Which Nationalities Need a UK Transit Visa from UAE?

From the UAE's major resident nationality groups, the following typically require a UK DATV: Afghan, Bangladeshi, Congolese, Eritrean, Ethiopian, Iranian, Iraqi, Libyan, Nigerian, Pakistani, Rwandan, Somali, Sri Lankan, Sudanese, South Sudanese, Syrian, and several others. Indian nationals generally do NOT require a DATV for airside transit at UK airports. UAE nationals do NOT require a transit visa for UK airports. GCC nationals (Saudi, Bahraini, Qatari, Kuwaiti, Omani) are generally exempt from UK transit visa requirements. The exact list changes periodically — Oki Doki verifies the current requirement for every specific nationality before advising.

When Is a UK Transit Visa NOT Required?

Several exemptions apply to the UK transit visa requirement even for nationalities that normally need one.

Exemptions Based on Onward Destination Visa

Nationals who normally require a UK DATV are exempt if they hold: a valid visa for the USA, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand; a valid visa for a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland; or a valid US permanent residence card (Green Card) where the transit is to or from the USA. These exemptions recognise that individuals already granted entry clearance by a high-standard immigration authority present a lower risk at UK transit. Oki Doki confirms whether a specific visa held by the applicant qualifies for a transit exemption before advising whether a DATV application is needed.

UK Visa Holders Are Already Exempt

Individuals who already hold a valid UK Standard Visitor Visa, Student Visa, or any other valid UK entry clearance do not need a separate DATV — their existing UK visa covers airside transit. UAE residents who previously obtained a UK tourist visa for a London visit and are now transiting UK airports en route to another destination do not need to apply for a separate transit visa during that UK visa's validity period.

Document Checklist — UK Direct Airside Transit Visa

UK DATV applications submitted online at gov.uk/transit-visa. Biometrics collected at VFS Global UAE. All documents in English or with certified English translation.

(a) Core Documents — All DATV Applicants

(1) Valid passport — at least 6 months' validity beyond the date of transit. (2) Completed online transit visa application at gov.uk/transit-visa — select "Direct Airside Transit" or "Visitor in Transit" as appropriate. (3) Confirmed full travel itinerary: departure from UAE (or other origin), UK transit airport name and connection terminal, and onward destination — all flight segments confirmed with booking reference numbers. (4) Onward visa or entry clearance for the destination country — UKVI specifically verifies that the applicant has permission to enter their stated final destination. (5) UAE residence visa and Emirates ID. (6) Bank statements: 1–3 months for DATV; 3–6 months for Visitor in Transit. (7) Application fee: GBP 35 for DATV or GBP 115 for Visitor in Transit — paid online during the application.

(b) Onward Destination Visa — The Critical Requirement

The most important additional document for a UK transit visa application is confirmed permission to enter the final destination country. The onward destination visa or entry clearance must be confirmed and approved before applying for the UK DATV. Examples: a UAE resident of Pakistani nationality transiting Heathrow en route to Canada must have a valid Canadian visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) already approved. A UAE resident of Sri Lankan nationality transiting Gatwick en route to the USA must have a valid US B1/B2 visa or approved ESTA. If the onward country's visa has not yet been obtained, the UK DATV application should wait until the onward authorisation is confirmed.

(c) Confirmed Flight Bookings — Both Legs Required

Both the inbound leg (from UAE to UK) and the onward leg (from UK to final destination) must be confirmed and ticketed — not on hold, not an open booking, not a reservation reference. UKVI requires evidence of a confirmed and ticketed onward journey departing the UK. An open-ended or unconfirmed itinerary is not acceptable for a transit visa. All flight segments in the itinerary — from UAE through UK to final destination and optionally the return — should be submitted as confirmed booking confirmations with booking reference numbers.

Financial Requirements for UK Transit Visa from UAE

Financial requirements for UK transit visas are significantly less rigorous than for visitor visas — the primary assessment focuses on the confirmed itinerary and valid onward destination clearance.

Financial Evidence for DATV

For airside transit (DATV), UKVI requires basic evidence that the traveller can fund their onward journey. Acceptable evidence: last 1–3 months' UAE bank statements showing a positive balance; a credit card statement showing available credit; or an employment letter confirming the UAE employer is funding the travel. No specific minimum closing balance is prescribed for DATV — the financial bar is significantly lower than the 6-month/AED 20,000+ standard visitor requirement. The primary assessment for DATV is the confirmed round-trip itinerary and valid onward destination visa or entry clearance.

Visitor in Transit — Higher Financial Standard

For the Visitor in Transit Visa (GBP 115) where the traveller passes through UK immigration, financial requirements are closer to a standard visitor application since the applicant technically enters the UK — even briefly. Bank statements covering the last 3 months and evidence of confirmed return or onward journey are required. A closing balance above AED 8,000 for a transit of less than 24 hours is generally sufficient. When in doubt, Oki Doki applies the 6-month standard to avoid any financial evidence concerns.

UK Transit Visa Application Process — Step by Step

UK transit visa applications submitted online at gov.uk/transit-visa with biometrics at VFS Global UAE.

VFS Global UAE — UK Visa Application Centre for Transit

VFS Global Dubai (Wafi Mall, Oud Metha): Sunday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM. VFS Global Abu Dhabi (Corniche Plaza 2): similar hours. Book biometric appointment at vfsglobal.com under UK Visa Applications UAE. Priority Service (additional GBP 250, 5 working days) is recommended if the UK transit is within 3–4 weeks of the application date. Super Priority (GBP 500, next working day) for genuinely urgent transit bookings.

Step-by-Step Application

Step 1 — Confirm whether your specific nationality requires a DATV from UAE and whether any exemption applies (valid USA, Canada, Australia, NZ, or EU/EEA visa held). Step 2 — Ensure the onward destination visa or entry clearance is already confirmed and approved. Step 3 — Complete the online transit visa application at gov.uk/transit-visa — select the correct category (DATV or Visitor in Transit). Step 4 — Pay GBP 35 (DATV) or GBP 115 (Visitor in Transit). Step 5 — Upload all documents: passport scan, confirmed full itinerary, onward visa confirmation, UAE residence visa, Emirates ID, bank statements. Step 6 — Book VFS biometric appointment — Priority Service if transit is within 4 weeks. Step 7 — Attend VFS in person — biometrics collected. Step 8 — UKVI processes (15–21 working days standard; 5 working days Priority; next working day Super Priority). Step 9 — Passport returned with UK transit visa vignette by DHL courier or VFS collection.

UK Transit Visa Fees 2026

UK transit visa fees are significantly lower than UK visitor visa fees.

  • Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) — GBP 35 (approximately AED 167). Non-refundable.
  • Visitor in Transit Visa — GBP 115 (approximately AED 550). Non-refundable.
  • Priority Service (5 working days) — additional GBP 250 (approximately AED 1,195). Recommended when transit is within 4 weeks.
  • Super Priority Service (next working day) — additional GBP 500 (approximately AED 2,385). For urgent transit bookings.
  • VFS Global service fee (biometric appointment) — approximately AED 150–200.
  • Oki Doki service fee — from AED 1,000 for DATV processing; AED 1,500 for Visitor in Transit.
  • Frequent UK transit travellers: a 6-month Standard Visitor Visa (GBP 115) often more cost-effective than applying for individual DATVs for each transit.

UK Transit Visa Processing Time from UAE — 2026

UK transit visa processing follows the same UKVI timelines as Standard Visitor Visas — there is no separate faster track for transit applications within the standard queue.

  • Standard processing: 15–21 working days from VFS biometric appointment.
  • Priority Service (additional GBP 250): 5 working days from biometric appointment.
  • Super Priority Service (additional GBP 500, where available): decision by end of next working day.
  • Apply minimum 4 weeks before the UK transit date for standard processing.
  • Transit within 3–4 weeks: use Priority Service.
  • Transit within 5–10 working days: use Super Priority if available at the UAE VAC.
  • Oki Doki monitors VFS availability daily and books the earliest available Priority slot for urgent transit applications.

The One Thing Everyone Gets Wrong — UK Transit Visa

The most consequential error UAE residents make regarding UK transit visas is discovering the need for one only after booking non-refundable UK-transiting connecting flights.

Check Before You Book — Not After

The most common and entirely preventable problem with UK transit visas is nationality-related: a UAE-resident Pakistani or Bangladeshi national books a connecting flight through London Heathrow to their final destination, then discovers they need a UK DATV that takes 15–21 working days to process. If the flight was booked without checking the UK transit visa requirement, the traveller faces either a tight and costly Priority Service timeline or the need to rebook onto a non-UK-transiting route. Oki Doki strongly recommends: always check UK transit visa requirements before booking any connecting flights through UK airports. Five minutes of checking can save AED 1,000–3,000 in rebooking fees and stress.

A Standard UK Visitor Visa Is Often More Practical Than Multiple DATVs

For UAE residents who transit through UK airports more than once or twice per year, applying for a 6-month Standard Visitor Visa (GBP 115) is more economical and practical than multiple DATVs (GBP 35 each plus VFS fees each time). A 6-month UK visitor visa covers unlimited airside transits plus any actual UK entry during its validity. A 2-year UK visitor visa (GBP 400) or 10-year UK visitor visa (GBP 963) is often the most practical long-term solution for UAE residents who regularly transit through Heathrow or Gatwick en route to other destinations. Oki Doki advises on the most cost-effective approach based on each client's specific UK transit frequency and travel patterns.

Financial Proof & Bank Statement Guide — UK Transit Visa

Significantly lower financial documentation requirements than UK visitor visa applications.

DATV Financial Evidence

Last 1–3 months' UAE bank statements with a positive balance. Evidence of confirmed onward travel — the itinerary with all flight bookings confirmed. Employment letter confirming UAE employer funding of travel, if applicable. No minimum closing balance is specified for DATV by UKVI — the financial focus is on confirming the traveller can fund the onward journey, not on demonstrating sufficient funds for a UK stay.

Visitor in Transit Financial Evidence

Bank statements covering the last 3 months. A closing balance above AED 8,000 for a transit of less than 24 hours. Evidence of confirmed onward travel. The financial bar is significantly lower than the 6-month/AED 20,000+ standard visitor visa requirement because the applicant will be in the UK for less than 24–48 hours. Oki Doki applies the higher standard when in doubt to eliminate any risk of financial concerns being raised.

UK Transit Visa Rejection Reasons from UAE

Common refusal reasons for UK transit visa applications from UAE.

  • Onward destination visa not confirmed — UKVI cannot grant transit to an applicant without confirmed permission to enter their stated destination.
  • Itinerary not fully confirmed — open-ended or unconfirmed onward flight segments.
  • Applying for DATV when the transit actually requires passing through UK immigration (Visitor in Transit Visa needed).
  • Prior UK visa refusal or prior overstay on a UK visa — creates heightened scrutiny even for transit applications.
  • Intent to enter the UK beyond the transit purpose — UKVI assesses transit applications for immigration intent.
  • Financial evidence insufficient to demonstrate ability to fund the onward journey.
  • Documents not in English and no certified translation provided.
  • Application submitted too close to transit date without Priority Service booked.
  • Passport validity less than 6 months beyond the transit date.
  • Itinerary holds uploaded instead of confirmed ticketed booking confirmations.

UK Transit Airports Most Used by UAE Travellers

The UK's major international airports where UAE-originating transit passengers most commonly connect.

London Heathrow (LHR)

Heathrow is the UK's largest airport and the most common UK transit hub for UAE-originating passengers. Five operational terminals (T2, T3, T4, T5 — T1 permanently closed). Emirates primarily arrives at T3; British Airways, Iberia, and Finnair use T5; Lufthansa, United, and Air Canada use T2. T4 is separated from the main terminal cluster and requires an airside bus connection; T5 is connected to T3 by an underground automated people mover. The DATV covers airside transit between any Heathrow terminals without requiring immigration control passage.

London Gatwick (LGW)

Gatwick is the UK's second-largest airport and a significant transit hub for UAE passengers connecting to North America, the Caribbean, and West Africa destinations. Emirates operates a daily Dubai–Gatwick service. Gatwick has North and South terminals connected by an automated people mover — airside connection between the two terminals is possible. easyJet, Norwegian, and TUI operate significant international routes from Gatwick relevant to UAE transit passengers connecting onward.

Manchester (MAN) and Birmingham (BHX)

Manchester Airport handles significant UAE-originating transit traffic for passengers connecting to North America (Virgin Atlantic, United, Delta, Air Canada from Manchester) and Canada (Air Transat, WestJet). flydubai and Emirates serve Manchester directly from Dubai. Birmingham Airport handles connections for central England-bound passengers and some onward transits. The DATV covers all UK international airports — the same visa applies regardless of which UK airport is used for the transit.

Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA)

Edinburgh Airport is increasingly relevant for UAE-originating transit passengers as flydubai operates direct Dubai–Edinburgh services. Glasgow Airport handles some Gulf carrier connections. The UK DATV applies universally to all UK international airports — there is no airport-specific transit visa; the same DATV approved for Heathrow transit may be used for Edinburgh or Manchester transit on the same or a different journey.

Common Mistakes UAE Applicants Make — UK Transit Visa

Most frequently recurring and entirely preventable errors regarding UK transit visas from UAE.

  • Booking UK-transiting connecting flights without first checking DATV requirements for the specific nationality.
  • Not obtaining the onward destination visa before applying for the UK DATV — the DATV requires confirmed onward clearance.
  • Applying for a DATV when the transit connection actually involves passing through UK immigration (which requires the Visitor in Transit Visa at GBP 115, not DATV at GBP 35).
  • Not checking whether an existing valid US, Canadian, Australian, NZ, or EU/EEA visa exempts from the DATV requirement entirely.
  • Not realising that an existing valid UK visitor visa already covers airside transit — no separate DATV application needed.
  • Applying too close to the transit date without Priority Service booked.
  • Applying for individual DATVs when a 2-year or 10-year UK Standard Visitor Visa is far more economical for regular transit travellers.
  • Not ensuring both inbound and outbound UK transit flight segments are confirmed and ticketed (not just on hold).
  • Assuming Indian nationals require a DATV — they generally do not for airside transit at UK airports.
  • Uploading unconfirmed itinerary hold documents rather than confirmed booking confirmation emails.
