Kenya Visa for UAE Residents — Overview
Kenya introduced its Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system in January 2024, replacing the previous visa-on-arrival system that many UAE residents relied upon. As of 2026, all visitors to Kenya — including UAE nationals, GCC nationals, and all other nationalities — must obtain an eTA before travel. There is no longer a visa-on-arrival option at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The eTA is applied for entirely online at etakenya.go.ke and is straightforward for most nationalities. UAE residents who previously relied on visa-on-arrival must now plan ahead and apply online at least 72 hours before departure.
Who Needs a Kenya eTA from UAE?
As of January 2024, all foreign nationals — including East African Community (EAC) nationals, GCC nationals, UAE nationals, and previously visa-exempt countries — must obtain a Kenya eTA before travel. This represents a complete overhaul from the previous system. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Chinese, and all Arab nationals residing in UAE must apply for the eTA online. The eTA replaced all previous visa categories including visa-on-arrival and standard sticker visas — there is no longer a Kenyan sticker visa option for most nationalities. Citizens of Kenya's EAC partner states (Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, DRC) may have streamlined eTA processing.
Kenya eTA — Key Operational Notes for UAE Applicants
The Kenya eTA portal (etakenya.go.ke) requires an international credit or debit card for payment — Visa and Mastercard are accepted; some prepaid cards issued in the UAE may be declined. The eTA fee is USD 30 per person for most nationalities. Processing time is officially 72 hours but can extend to 5 days during high-demand periods (December, summer). The eTA is tied to the specific passport number declared at application — if you renew your passport after receiving the eTA, you must apply for a new eTA with the new passport number. The approved eTA allows a stay of 90 days and is valid for single entry or multiple entries depending on the category. Carry a printed copy to Nairobi airport; border officials at JKIA regularly request the printed version.
Types of Kenya eTA Available from UAE
Kenya's eTA system has simplified the previous multi-category visa structure into a streamlined set of digital authorisations. Understanding which category applies to your trip purpose is essential as wrong category declarations can cause issues at Kenyan immigration.
Single Entry eTA (Tourism / Visit)
The single entry eTA is the standard option for UAE residents travelling to Kenya for tourism, leisure, wildlife safaris, family visits, or short-term personal travel. It allows one entry into Kenya with a stay of up to 90 days. Fee: USD 30 (approximately AED 110). The 90-day stay begins from the date of entry — not the date of eTA issue. An eTA issued 30 days before travel is still valid on arrival. The eTA cannot be extended inside Kenya; if a longer stay is needed, a formal application for extension must be made at the Department of Immigration in Nairobi before the 90-day period expires.
Multiple Entry eTA (Frequent Visitors)
The multiple entry eTA is designed for UAE residents who travel to Kenya regularly — such as businesspeople, NGO workers, researchers, and those with family connections. It allows multiple entries within a 12-month validity period, with each stay capped at 90 days. Fee: USD 50 (approximately AED 184). The multiple entry eTA requires additional justification in the application form explaining the frequency of travel and the business or personal relationship requiring regular Kenya visits. Oki Doki prepares the supporting narrative for multiple entry eTA applications to maximise approval rates.
East Africa Tourist Visa (Kenya + Uganda + Rwanda)
The East Africa Tourist Visa is a joint visa covering Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda — particularly useful for UAE residents planning comprehensive East Africa safari itineraries. It is valid for 90 days across all three countries and costs USD 100 (approximately AED 367). It is applied for at the Kenya immigration authority online portal and can be used to enter any of the three partner countries first. For UAE residents planning a Kenya–Uganda–Rwanda safari circuit, this is significantly more cost-effective than purchasing three separate eTAs. Note: Tanzania has not joined this arrangement — a separate Tanzania visa/eTA is required if including Tanzania in the itinerary.
Business eTA
The Business eTA is for UAE residents travelling to Kenya for business meetings, conferences, trade fairs, or commercial activities. It requires the same USD 30 fee as the tourist eTA but requires declaration of the business purpose, the Kenyan company or host organisation name, and the type of activities. Business eTAs do not permit employment in Kenya. UAE-based company owners attending a Kenyan trade fair or meeting a local distributor should apply for the Business eTA. Supporting documents (company introduction letter, event invitation) are not required at the eTA application stage but should be carried to Kenya in case immigration officers ask for justification.
Transit eTA (Nairobi Connections)
UAE residents transiting through Nairobi's JKIA to other African destinations must obtain a transit eTA if they will exit the international transit area — for example, when changing terminals or collecting checked baggage. The transit eTA costs USD 20 (approximately AED 73) and is valid for up to 72 hours. Airside transit (staying within the international departure zone without passing immigration) does not require an eTA. Kenya Airways is a major hub carrier for East and Central Africa, meaning many UAE-to-Africa itineraries connect via Nairobi — verify your specific routing before assuming airside transit applies.
Document Checklist by Applicant Type — Kenya eTA
Kenya's eTA is entirely digital — no physical documents are submitted through VFS or any submission centre. All required information and documents are uploaded to the online portal at etakenya.go.ke. Below is the information and documentation required per applicant type.
(a) Core Documents — All Applicants
All Kenya eTA applicants from UAE must have ready for the online application: (1) Passport scan — front biographical page, clear and high-resolution; passport must be valid for minimum 6 months beyond intended Kenya departure date. (2) UAE residence visa and Emirates ID copies — uploaded as supporting documentation confirming legal UAE residency. (3) Passport photograph — recent, white background, meeting standard passport photo specifications. (4) Return or onward travel itinerary — flight booking confirmation showing entry and exit dates for Kenya. (5) Proof of accommodation in Kenya — hotel booking confirmation, safari lodge reservation, or letter of invitation from a Kenya-based host. (6) International credit or debit card for payment of the eTA fee (USD 30 per person). (7) Valid email address — the eTA approval document is delivered by email and must be printed and carried to Kenya.
(b) Employed Applicants
For employed UAE residents, the Kenya eTA online form requires declaration of: employer name and address in UAE; job title; monthly salary (declared in USD or AED equivalent); and travel purpose. No salary certificate or bank statement is required to be uploaded for the standard tourist eTA. However, for business eTA applications, a letter from the UAE employer confirming the business purpose of the Kenya visit and authorising the trip strengthens the application and should be carried to the airport.
(c) Self-Employed / Business Owners
Self-employed UAE residents and business owners applying for Kenya eTA must declare their business name, type of business, and UAE trade licence number in the online form. No trade licence upload is required for the tourist eTA, but for business eTA applications, uploading a copy of the UAE trade licence as a supporting document is recommended. Business owners attending meetings, exhibitions, or conducting corporate activities in Kenya should clearly describe the specific business activities in the form's purpose declaration to avoid complications at JKIA immigration.
(d) Dependents / Housewives
Dependents and non-working family members apply individually for their own Kenya eTA — there is no family eTA or group application option. Each family member, including minors, requires a separate eTA application and separate payment. For children under 18 travelling with parents, the parents' passport details must be declared in the child's eTA application. Minors travelling without both parents should carry a notarised consent letter from the absent parent(s). Each family member's eTA is tied to their individual passport number.
(e) Students
Students from UAE universities travelling to Kenya for tourism, academic research, or a gap year experience apply for the standard tourist eTA. Students travelling for academic fieldwork, university exchange programmes, or research attachments should apply for the appropriate eTA category and declare the academic institution in Kenya as the host. Long-term student visas (over 90 days) are not currently available through the eTA system — students requiring longer stays must apply for a Kenya Student Permit through the Department of Immigration Services after arrival in Kenya.
Financial Requirements for Kenya eTA from UAE
Kenya's eTA system does not require bank statements or proof of funds to be uploaded during the online application. However, Kenya's immigration officers at JKIA do have discretion to request proof of funds at the port of entry — having the following documentation available in your carry-on significantly reduces the risk of secondary screening.
Recommended Financial Preparation for Kenya Travel
For a 7-day Kenya trip (Nairobi city + Maasai Mara safari): carry proof of funds showing minimum AED 7,000 (approximately USD 1,900) in accessible funds — bank statement, credit card statement, or cash declaration. For a 14-day Kenya trip: AED 12,000 (approximately USD 3,300). For wildlife safari packages (typically USD 300–800 per person per day at mid-range lodges), the safari booking confirmation itself serves as strong financial proof — show the fully paid safari booking at JKIA immigration if asked. Immigration officers at JKIA are particularly attentive to first-time Kenya visitors with no return flight booked or with open-ended itineraries.
eTA Application Financial Declarations
The Kenya eTA form asks for approximate daily budget and source of funds. Declare an amount consistent with your actual travel plan: for a mid-range Nairobi and safari trip, USD 150–300 per day is a reasonable declaration. Significantly understating your daily budget (e.g., USD 20/day for a Maasai Mara safari) creates inconsistency in your application that may trigger secondary review. Source of funds should be declared as "employment income" or "personal savings" — not "cash on hand" for amounts exceeding USD 5,000.
Kenya eTA Application Process — Step by Step
The Kenya eTA process is entirely online — there is no VFS Global submission centre, no embassy appointment, and no physical document submission for standard eTA applications. The entire process from application to approval can be completed in 72 hours.
Kenya eTA Portal — Online Application
The official Kenya eTA portal is etakenya.go.ke — no third-party sites should be used; several fraudulent eTA portals exist that charge inflated fees and delay delivery. The official portal has a green Kenyan government branding. Do not apply through any portal that charges more than USD 30 for a single entry tourist eTA.
Step-by-Step eTA Process
Step 1 — Visit etakenya.go.ke and create an account with your email address. Step 2 — Select the appropriate eTA category (Tourist Single, Tourist Multiple, Business, Transit). Step 3 — Complete the application form: personal details, passport information, UAE address, Kenya travel details (entry date, port of entry, accommodation address, travel purpose). Step 4 — Upload required documents: passport biographical page scan, recent photograph, flight itinerary, accommodation proof. Step 5 — Pay the eTA fee (USD 30 single entry, USD 50 multiple entry) by international credit or debit card. Step 6 — Receive eTA confirmation email within 72 hours; download and print the approval document. Step 7 — Upon arrival at JKIA (or other approved Kenya port of entry), present the printed eTA with your passport to the immigration officer. Kenya eTA Processing Time from UAE — 2026
The Kenya eTA typically processes within 72 hours of application submission and fee payment. During peak periods — December school holidays, Easter, and the July–October Maasai Mara wildebeest migration season — processing can extend to 5 working days. Oki Doki recommends applying a minimum of 7 days before travel to allow buffer for any processing delays or requests for additional information.

- Peak season processing (December, Easter, July–October migration season): 3–5 working days.
- Multiple entry eTA processing: typically 3–5 working days as applications undergo additional review.

- If the eTA is not approved within 5 working days, check spam/junk folder first, then contact the Kenya Immigration portal support.
- There is no official express processing option for Kenya eTA — all applications are processed in order of submission.

- A rejected eTA can be re-applied for immediately — most rejections are due to documentation errors that are easily corrected.
The One Thing Everyone Gets Wrong — Kenya eTA
The single most misunderstood aspect of the Kenya eTA system for UAE residents is the January 2024 change that eliminated visa-on-arrival. Many UAE residents — particularly those who have visited Kenya before — still believe they can purchase a visa on arrival at JKIA. This is no longer the case. Arriving at JKIA without a valid eTA will result in being refused entry and returned on the next available flight at your own expense.
Visa-on-Arrival No Longer Available — What This Means Practically
Before January 2024, GCC nationals, UAE residents, and many other nationalities could purchase a Kenya visa on arrival at JKIA for USD 50. As of 1 January 2024, this option was abolished and replaced by the mandatory pre-travel eTA system. Airlines flying to Nairobi are required to check for valid eTA documentation at check-in — flydubai, Emirates, Kenya Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines operating Dubai–Nairobi routes will deny boarding to passengers without a valid Kenya eTA. This is a critical planning requirement: unlike India's e-Visa which can be applied for 72 hours before departure, the Kenya eTA should be applied for at least 7 days in advance to ensure processing completion before the departure date.
eTA Validity vs. Length of Stay — Understanding the Distinction
The Kenya eTA has an issue date, an expiry date, and an allowed stay period — these are three different things that many applicants confuse. A single entry eTA issued on January 1 with a 90-day validity expires on March 31 — you must enter Kenya before March 31. Once you enter Kenya, you are permitted to stay for up to 90 days from your entry date — not from the eTA issue date. If you enter on March 30 (the day before expiry), you can still stay until June 28 (90 days from entry). Understanding this distinction prevents premature departure or overstay violations.
Financial Proof & Bank Statement Guide — Kenya eTA
While Kenya's eTA application does not require bank statement uploads, UAE residents should prepare financial documentation to carry with them to Kenya, particularly for first-time visitors and those on open-ended or long-duration itineraries.
What to Carry to JKIA
JKIA immigration officers have the authority to request proof of financial sufficiency from any traveller regardless of their valid eTA status. Carry: last 3 months' UAE bank statements (printed from online banking or original bank-issued statements); a copy of your UAE employment letter or salary certificate; the full safari or hotel booking confirmation (particularly for premium lodge bookings which demonstrate substantial pre-paid financial commitment); and a credit card with available limit of at least USD 1,000 as backup financial evidence. For UAE residents with Maasai Mara safari bookings at lodges costing USD 400+ per night, the fully paid booking confirmation is the strongest financial proof available.
When JKIA Immigration May Ask More Questions
Secondary immigration screening at JKIA is most common for: first-time Kenya visitors without a return flight at the time of arrival; visitors declaring a budget inconsistent with their declared accommodation (e.g., stating USD 50/day budget while checking into a USD 400/night safari lodge); UAE residents whose passport has multiple East African or Sub-Saharan African stamps suggesting extended regional travel; and visitors with very short UAE residency history. In all these cases, the preparation of a clear trip itinerary, accommodation confirmations, and a bank statement is the most effective response to immigration questions.
Kenya eTA Rejection Reasons — UAE Applicants
Kenya eTA applications are rejected less frequently than consulate-based visa applications, but the following causes account for the majority of rejections and processing delays experienced by UAE-based applicants:
- Incorrect passport validity — applying with a passport expiring within 6 months of the Kenya departure date. Prevention: renew passport before applying; Kenya requires minimum 6 months validity beyond departure.
- Poor quality passport scan — blurry, partially cut off, or unreadable biographical page photograph. Prevention: use a flatbed scanner or professional scanning; phone camera photos are often rejected due to glare.
- Mismatch between flight itinerary and declared travel dates — applying for eTA with entry date of March 1 but uploaded flight shows March 3. Prevention: ensure all dates in the form match the actual flight booking exactly.
- Using a fraudulent third-party eTA site — paying USD 50–100 to a non-government portal that may not properly submit the application to Kenya's system. Prevention: only use etakenya.go.ke.
- Expired passport submitted — some applicants upload a scan of their old expired passport alongside their new passport, creating confusion. Prevention: upload only the current valid passport; remove old documents.
- No accommodation proof for first-time visitors — applying without any hotel booking or host invitation, particularly for first-time Kenya visitors. Prevention: include booking confirmation; a simple hotel reservation (not necessarily fully prepaid) is sufficient.
- Card payment failure — using a UAE prepaid card or a card without international transaction capability for the eTA fee. Prevention: use a standard Visa or Mastercard credit card with international transactions enabled.
- Applying too close to departure — submitting the eTA application less than 72 hours before a flight. Prevention: apply minimum 7 days before departure.
- Safari camp or lodge listed in application is outside Kenya — some UAE residents planning multi-country trips accidentally list a Tanzania or Uganda lodge as their Kenya accommodation. Prevention: list only Kenya-based accommodation for the Kenya eTA.
- Not printing the approved eTA — presenting only a mobile phone screenshot at JKIA. Prevention: always print the eTA approval document; JKIA officers regularly require the physical printout.

Kenya's wildlife calendar and climate vary dramatically across regions. UAE residents planning a Kenya trip must align their travel dates with the wildlife seasons and weather patterns to maximise the experience.
The Great Migration Season (July–October)
The Great Wildebeest Migration in the Maasai Mara is one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles, running from July through October. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross the Mara River between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara — the dramatic river crossings (with crocodile activity) peak in August and September. Average temperatures in the Maasai Mara during this period: 20–28°C days, 10–15°C nights (pack warm layers for early morning game drives). This is peak season — Maasai Mara lodge prices reach AED 1,800–3,700 per person per night. Book minimum 6 months in advance; apply for eTA minimum 2 weeks before travel due to processing volume.
Short Dry Season (January–February)
January and February are excellent months for Kenya wildlife viewing with dry conditions, clear skies, and thin vegetation making animals easier to spot. Amboseli National Park with its views of Mount Kilimanjaro is at its most spectacular in January–February (average 26–30°C). Long Rains Season (March–May) — Budget Option
Kenya's long rains season (March–May, particularly April) sees significantly lower tourism and dramatically reduced lodge rates — some premium Maasai Mara camps offer 40–50% discounts. Wildlife remains excellent as the landscape turns lush green and newborn animals attract predators. April is Uganda's gorilla trekking peak (Bwindi Impenetrable Forest). The long rains can make dirt tracks in some conservancies difficult for vehicles — inquire with your lodge about road conditions. Nairobi average: 22–25°C. Ideal for UAE residents seeking premium experiences at significantly lower cost.
December–January — Holiday Season
December is UAE school holiday season and one of the busiest periods for UAE residents visiting Kenya. The short dry season (November–December) offers excellent wildlife conditions — the Maasai Mara grasslands are golden and animals are concentrated around water sources. Diani Beach (Kenyan coast) offers Indian Ocean swimming conditions ideal for families: 28–32°C sea temperature, calm waters. Common Mistakes UAE Applicants Make — Kenya eTA

- Expecting visa-on-arrival at JKIA — the old USD 50 visa-on-arrival system was abolished in January 2024. No eTA = no entry. Airlines check eTA at Dubai check-in.
- Using unofficial eTA websites — Google searches for "Kenya eTA" return numerous fraudulent sites charging USD 50–100. Only etakenya.go.ke is the official portal.
- Applying too close to departure — applying 24–48 hours before a flight. Standard processing is 72 hours and can extend to 5 days. Apply minimum 7 days before.
- Uploading low-resolution passport scans — blurry passport biographical page causes processing delay or rejection. Use a flatbed scanner at minimum 300 DPI.
- Not printing the eTA approval document — arriving at JKIA with only a phone screenshot. JKIA immigration officers regularly request the printed paper copy.
- Renewing passport after eTA approval — the eTA is tied to the specific passport number. A new passport requires a new eTA application before travel.
- Incorrect entry date in the eTA form — entering estimated travel dates that then change, leaving a mismatch between the eTA and actual flight. Solution: always apply after booking final flights.
- Not declaring business activities for a business eTA — travelling on a tourist eTA while conducting actual business meetings, which is technically a visa category violation that can attract scrutiny.
- Family applying on a single eTA — each family member including children needs an individual eTA with individual payment.
- Including Tanzania accommodation in the Kenya eTA form — listing a Serengeti camp as your Kenya accommodation. List only Kenya-based addresses in the Kenya eTA.
