Key Takeaways

  • 1Lebanese passport holders residing in the UAE should prepare a Malta Schengen file based on Lebanese nationality; UAE residence supports filing jurisdiction but does not create a visa waiver.
  • 2The UAE file should prove legal residence in the UAE and show that Malta is the main Schengen destination, longest stay or correct first-entry country where stays are equal.
  • 3Before applying, check consistency across the Lebanese passport, UAE residence visa, Emirates ID, application form, employer letter, bank evidence, bookings, insurance and leave dates.
  • 4Employment, business ownership, tenancy, family residence and valid UAE status can support UAE ties, but they do not guarantee approval and must not contradict the itinerary or finances.
  • 5Previous visas may help where relevant, and previous refusals should be disclosed where the form asks; Lebanese nationals are also on the Schengen prior-consultation list.

Malta visa for Lebanese citizens in Dubai: start with what the file must prove

For Lebanese passport holders living in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE, the practical issue is not only which documents to upload or carry to VFS. The file must prove three things at the same time: the applicant still needs a Schengen Visa because the passport is Lebanese, the UAE is the correct place to lodge the application because the applicant resides there, and Malta is the correct Schengen state for the itinerary. As of 24 September 2026, Malta applications in the UAE are lodged through the Malta route at the Visa Application Center in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, according to VFS and Malta’s UAE consular information.

This workshop is for short-stay tourism or visiting family and friends in Malta. For case handling, document preparation and appointment support, see Oki-Doki’s Malta Schengen Visa service. If your concern is broader Schengen entry planning after a visa is issued, the separate guide on using a Schengen visa as a UAE resident for Croatia explains why the visa sticker and destination rules should not be confused.

Evidence problem: UAE residence gives jurisdiction, not a visa waiver

A Lebanese citizen residing in the UAE should prepare the case as a Lebanese-passport Schengen application lodged in the UAE. The European Commission explains that citizens of certain non-EU countries need a short-stay visa for travel to the Schengen area, while the EU visa-list regulation separates visa-required and visa-exempt nationalities. UAE nationality is treated differently from UAE residence; living in Dubai does not turn a Lebanese passport into a UAE passport for Schengen purposes (European Commission; Regulation (EU) 2018/1806).

The UAE part of the file matters because Malta’s UAE route is for citizens and residents of the country where they are applying. The current Malta UAE checklist requires copies of the UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, and states that their validity should extend at least three months from departure from the Schengen area (VFS Malta UAE checklist). If your UAE residence is close to expiry, renew or get case-specific advice before building the travel file around fixed flights.

Evidence problem: Malta must be the correct Schengen destination

Before reviewing bank statements or hotel bookings, check whether Malta is the correct mission. VFS Malta UAE states that the application should go to the country of the main purpose or longest stay; if stays are equal, the first-entry country is used. The European Commission gives the same general where-to-apply rule for Schengen applications (VFS Malta UAE visa information; European Commission).

For a Lebanese UAE resident, this means the itinerary should not show Malta as a token one-night stop while the real holiday is elsewhere. If Malta is the main destination, the hotel, invitation, internal transport and leave dates should make that visible. If you are visiting several Schengen states, prepare a day-by-day itinerary and calculate nights before you book the appointment.

Document audit worksheet for a Lebanese UAE resident

Use this as a practical review sheet before the appointment. It is not an official form and does not replace the current Malta/VFS checklist.

DocumentWhat it provesCheck before applying
Lebanese passportIdentity, nationality and travel document validityOriginal plus copy; at least two blank face-to-face pages; validity at least three months beyond the requested visa validity, as stated in the Malta UAE checklist.

Application formDeclared purpose, dates, destination and personal historyUse the same passport number, employer, address, travel dates and prior-refusal answers as the supporting documents.
Bank statements and salary slipsFinancial capacity and regular incomeThe checklist asks for three months of bank statements, all pages bank-stamped, and salary slips for the last three months; salary credits should be reconcilable with the employer letter.
Employer letter, NOC-style letter or self-employment proofUAE employment or business tie and return-to-work expectationEmployer letter should state the employer’s details, position, tenure, duration, salary and confirmation of resuming duties after return; self-employed applicants should check trade licence or UAE property-title evidence listed by the checklist.
Accommodation or invitationTrip purpose and where the applicant will stayHotel dates should match flights and leave approval. For visiting family or friends, check invitation, host ID/passport, host residence permit if applicable, and notarised Declaration of Proof where the host provides accommodation or covers expenses.

Travel medical insuranceMedical cover for Schengen travelThe checklist requires Schengen-area health insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 covering the visa validity period.

Evidence problem: names, numbers and dates do not line up

Lebanese names can appear in different orders or transliterations across a passport, UAE visa, Emirates ID, bank account and employment records. The official checklist does not prescribe a special name-mismatch explanation, but contradictions can make the file harder to read. Check these fields line by line before submission:

  • full name spelling and order across passport, residence visa, Emirates ID, form, bank statements and employer letter;
  • passport number on the UAE residence record, application form, flight booking and insurance;
  • date of birth, nationality and gender across identity documents;
  • job title, joining date, salary and employer name across the employer letter, salary slips and bank credits;
  • trip dates across flights, hotel or invitation, leave approval, insurance and form;
  • residence validity against the planned Schengen exit date.

If a difference is real and cannot be corrected before the appointment, do not hide it. Prepare a short explanation and supporting evidence, then confirm whether VFS or the consulate will accept it in the current format.

Evidence problem: UAE ties are present but not clearly documented

UAE ties can help show why the application is being lodged from the UAE and why the applicant’s normal residence base is outside Malta. They do not guarantee approval. For employed applicants, the employer letter should be specific rather than generic: position, tenure, salary, leave period and confirmation that the applicant will resume duties after return are identified in the Malta UAE checklist. For business owners, the checklist points to a valid trade licence or title deed of UAE property for self-employed applicants.

Other residence-base evidence can be relevant when it explains the applicant’s situation: tenancy, family residence, school commitments for children, or a sponsor relationship in the UAE. Use these only if they are accurate and consistent. A weak but honest file is safer than a polished file containing claims that bank statements, leave dates or residence documents do not support.

Evidence problem: funds, sponsor evidence and trip costs tell different stories

The Malta UAE checklist asks for proof of sufficient and regular personal financial means, including three months of stamped bank statements and three months of salary slips. If someone else covers the costs, the checklist requires the sponsor’s original three-month bank statement with all pages bank-stamped, a guarantee letter and the sponsor’s passport copy (VFS checklist).

The audit question is simple: who is paying, and does every document say the same thing? If the applicant’s bank account pays for flights but the Malta host says they cover all expenses, clarify the split. If the UAE employer letter lists a salary that does not appear in bank credits, prepare an explanation rather than leaving the officer to infer it. For family-funded cases, the sponsor evidence should not contradict the applicant’s own declared employment or travel purpose. The same logic appears in other document-heavy UAE visa files, such as evidence preparation for an Estonia Schengen application from Dubai, where the sponsor relationship must be clear rather than merely generous.

Evidence problem: previous visas, refusals or blank travel history are handled casually

Previous Schengen, UK, US or other visas can be useful context when they are genuine and relevant, especially if they are visible in the current passport or old passports. The official Malta UAE checklist reviewed for this article did not establish a universal requirement to submit a separate travel-history document or old passports for Lebanese applicants. However, Malta’s UAE consular page states that the Consulate may ask for other supporting documents it considers necessary (Missions Malta).

Previous refusals should be treated as a truthfulness issue, not as something to manage with concealment. Where the Schengen form asks about earlier refusal history, answer accurately. Do not remove passport pages, omit old passports if they are requested, or invent a different travel purpose to distance the new file from an old refusal. For planning after a refusal in another visa context, the approach in appointment and refusal planning for an Argentina tourist visa from the UAE is relevant: rebuild the evidence before reapplying rather than rushing the same contradictions into a new file.

Lebanese nationals are also listed in the European Commission’s Annex 16 prior-consultation list under Visa Code Article 22. This means at least one Schengen State requires its central authorities to be consulted for applications by nationals of listed countries; Malta’s UAE page says such consultation may take up to seven calendar days (European Commission Annex 16; Missions Malta). This is not an automatic refusal signal and should not be described as a separate application.

Evidence problem: missing documents, translations or attestations are guessed

If a required document is missing, first identify whether it is missing because it does not apply or because it exists but is unavailable. A hotel booking is not interchangeable with a family invitation. A UAE trade licence is not the same as an employer letter. A sponsor bank statement is not a substitute for a Malta host’s notarised Declaration of Proof where that route applies.

The evidence reviewed for this guide did not establish a blanket rule that every Lebanese civil document must be translated, attested or legalised for a Malta tourist file lodged in the UAE. Requirements may depend on the document language, document type and current VFS or consular instructions. If you plan to submit Arabic civil records, Lebanese documents, sponsor relationship proof or non-standard business papers, verify the current translation and document attestation expectations before the appointment. Do not assume that an attested document fixes a contradiction; attestation can support authenticity, but it does not make inconsistent dates or identities coherent.

Final pre-submission consistency map

Before booking or attending the VFS appointment, read the file once as if you knew nothing about the applicant. It should answer: who is travelling, why Malta, why from the UAE, who pays, where the applicant stays, when they return, and what UAE base they return to. If any answer depends on an explanation that is not in the documents, add a concise cover note and evidence where appropriate.

Applications for Malta from the UAE are submitted through VFS centers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and an appointment is required according to Malta’s UAE consular information. The consulate, not VFS, decides the application. If your file includes an expiring UAE residence visa, a recent job change, a sponsor-funded trip, previous refusal history or inconsistent Lebanese/UAE identity records, get the documents reviewed before committing to non-refundable plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if you are legally resident in the UAE and Malta is the correct Schengen destination for your trip, you can lodge a Malta short-stay application through the Malta VFS route in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The application is assessed by the Maltese authorities, not by VFS.

Yes, Lebanese citizens can apply for a Schengen visa when their passport nationality requires one and they meet the document and eligibility requirements. UAE residence does not remove the Lebanese passport-based visa requirement for Malta short stays.

Yes, Malta is part of the Schengen area, so a valid Schengen visa can allow travel to Malta if the visa conditions, validity, entries and permitted duration of stay cover the trip. You must also respect the itinerary and entry conditions at the border.

This guide covers a short-stay Malta Schengen visa for tourism or visiting, not a Malta work visa. The research evidence used here does not establish a current Malta work-visa fee from the UAE, so applicants should confirm work-permit and national-visa costs with the relevant Maltese authority or official service provider.
